Should We Dump Regular Yogurt For Good?

Edward vs. Jacob. N’Sync vs. BSB. Greek vs. Regular.

There is always a choice to make but what is really best?

I know that Cooper has no real preference over yogurt.  In Cooper’s mind, yogurt=GOOD.  But as a mom, it is important to make sure my kid gets the most nutrition possible and as a health conscious adult, I want to make the best choices for myself as well.

For along time I was a Dannon Light n’ Fit addict.  I loved vanilla and white chocolate raspberry.  It tasted good and was light in calories, what else could a girl want?  But then I saw the shelves be taken over by greek yogurt and I realized there was probably a reason.  At the time I had just decided it was more important to be on a journey for health, not weight loss, so it was time to look into it. (Plus, I really needed to cut back on the artificial sweeteners)

I slowly, reluctantly, gave Greek yogurt a try.  I HATED it.  The texture, the flavor and the after taste were killing me.  I would swallow it whole and wash it down with water.  It kept me full but it wasn’t tasty, so I just kept eating it until my taste buds finally adjusted.  I still don’t LOVE it but in the name of health it is worth it.

If you didn’t know yet, Greek yogurt is regular yogurt strained extensively to remove much of the liquid whey, lactose, and sugar, which cuts back on the unhealthy parts (and a little calcium as well). You win some you lose some.

There are many different brands, but I like Chobani and Stoneyfield Farms best.  Since Chobani doesn’t have regular yogurt here are the comparisons for Stoneyfield’s yogurts so you can see a side by side comparison of the two:

Clearly, Oikos is the winner in every category except calcium.  Although regular yogurt has more calcium it can’t outweigh the rest of the benefits of the Greek yogurt.  I am glad I made the switch over and happy Cooper loves it as well.

I believe both types are healthy but the edge Greek has over regular is a no brainer.  It is worth the tangy vs. sweet taste in order to help get all the protein.  I mean what else is going to help me get those freaking pull ups?  You have to feed those muscles right!

Question: What do you eat?  Do you enjoy the flavor better in Greek?  If you have recipes that include yogurt please share the link  I’d love to try!!

  1. I eat the greek yogurt, but I have the vanilla, non-fat from trader joes which tastes much less bitter & sour than many. I think the honey flavored ones are actually the most bitter. Also, as a reference for you, since you mentioned being health conscious… light n’ fit brand of yogurt has a lot of fake sugars in it, which are linked to cancers & also theorized to actually still be metabolized like sugar by some scientists. EIther way try to avoid the fake stuff & no matter what –greek or regular– it’s still healthy. As for your baby, I say, give him whatever he likes best of the natural stuff, my daughter personally doesn’t eat greek yogurt even though I do & she’s still more fit & alert than I am =)

    • That is exactly why I tried to cut out light n’ fit. It tastes so good but that damage from it isn’t worth it!

I haven’t tried trader joes but I will next time I get up there (not one close by). I like Chobani but Stoneyfield is organic which is why I sometimes buy it a little more. I am not sure if the is much of a difference between the two. My son likes chobani much more!

      Thanks for the great insight!

  2. I am with you, Katie. As a vegetarian (pescetarian, really), Greek yogurt has become a lunch staple as a good meat-free option that packs a lot of protein. Problem is, I have to force feed myself as I don’t enjoy the flavor. I’ve found that some brands (Voskos is one) are less tangy and it helps to mix some fruit in, but still don’t love the stuff. Even so, given the health benefits, I likely will never touch reg. yogurt again.

  3. I can’t even bring myself to force feed greek yogurt. I swallow it, but it wants to come back up. I just try to cut yogurts with a lot of artificial sweeteners out and get my protein elsewhere.

  4. I’m obsessed with all yogurt in general, but Greek is by far the best! I love everything about it and I love to cook with it too! I like them all: chobani, oikos, fage… Whatever! Great topic! Spa love!

  5. I’m obsessed with greek yogurt. I’ve always been a huge yogurt fan, and transitioned to greek yogurt a year and a half ago. As someone who is lactose intolerant, Greek yogurt has been fantastic!
